How ‘Avatar’ Can Revoloutionize The Film Industry
With the hype and reflections from Avatar Day and the release of the film’s trailer, there has been much talk about what exactly is this film and why is it being pushed so hard by Fox. There have been comparisons to the colossal success of Titanic and to colossal failure of Delgo. I don’t know how it will all shake out come December 18th, but I do see that if it succeeds, a shift could occur from what we once knew as film.
Firstly, just imagine having no more “epic stare” shots. It would be null and void, since with this technology the audience is put in the action and is no longer a Conscientious Objector. Rather then artificially using someone else to show the audience the vastness of a shot, the audience can feel it for themselves. That is one thing I noticed in the 15 minutes of footage that Cameron used. The shots themselves were epic and he didn’t need any extra help to spice that fact up.
Second, just imagine how this can change the facial expressions in animated films. From what I saw from Zoe Saldana’s Na’vi, it is as close to the human face and idiosyncrasies I have seen that wasn’t live action. Put that power in a Pixar film and there wouldn’t be enough tissue boxes.
Third, it will revolutionize the way films are marketed since the breadth of the film is it’s 3D Imax element. The mix reviews of the 2D trailer shows that is the film’s biggest drawing point and also it’s biggest weakness. If somehow Fox is able to turn this into a mammoth, it will not be able to happen without significant help from the marketing department. It is how they frame the message that will keep the general public aware and enthused and the fanboys happy. It’s going to need some out of the box ideas, like Avatar Day to keep up the momentum till December.
I really think this film is going to be a game changer.
